Independent Media scooped two top awards at the inaugural Digital Media Africa Awards organised by the World Association of Newspapers (WAN-IFRA). The awards took place in Sandton, Johannesburg on Thursday night.

Independent Media was the winner, in the category of Best Tablet Publishing for its IOL App, as well as in the category, Best Use of Online Video for the video, What would you take a bullet for.

Team Independent were also runner ups in the following categories: Best News Website (www.iol.co.za); Best Entertainment and Lifestyle Website (Condé Nast House & Garden); Best Entertainment and Lifestyle Mobile Service (Condé Nast House & Garden App) and Best New Product (Loot/Isolezwe)

“This is a wonderful reward for the creativity and talent of our new media teams. Awards such as these are great for the industry and certainly positions South Africa at the forefront of media innovation in Africa. I’m very proud of my team”, said Executive Chairman of Independent Media, Dr Iqbal Survé.

The awards ceremony was attended by over 300 delegates from more than 16 countries.

WAN-IFRA’s African Digital Media Awards recognise publishers who have adopted digital media and mobile strategies as part of their total product offering to meet the major changes in how people consume news and information today.

The night was celebrated in style, with DJ for the night, Rita Ray. DJ Rita Ray is a Club DJ, broadcaster, presenter, curator, performer and compiler.  She presents the African music review for Focus On Africa on the BBC World Service.
