Our private equity portfolio deploys its own capital, and is independently owned and managed by the Group’s investment professionals, who are highly incentivised and have aligned their interests with that of the Group’s “doing good and doing well” philosophy.
Through our private equity portfolio, Sekunjalo ranks as one of the outstanding success stories on the African continent with investment transactions ranging from USD10 to USD200 million. Through our private equity investments, Sekunjalo has attained high performance outcomes.
Philanthropy
Survé Philanthropies is the philanthropic initiative of Dr Survé and the Survé family. Dr Survé has created an endowment whereby 90% of the value of his investments in the Sekunjalo Group, including its profits and dividends, are provided for the benefit of numerous Survé philanthropic foundations.

This bursary initiated by Dr Iqbal Survé provides learners with the opportunity to further their studies at universities, technikons and specialised academies. Many of these young South African men and women aspire to become qualified professionals and are afforded this opportunity through the Trust. The bursary is directed at the poorest students who, without the support of the bursary, would lack the funds and resources to fulfill their dreams.
The Survé Family Foundation was established by the founder and Chairman of the Sekunjalo Group, Dr M. Iqbal Survé, in 2004, with an endowment of 50 million US Dollars. The foundation’s focus is on Africa; in areas of children and women’s rights, and those largely affected by the trafficking of young children and teenagers. The foundation has partnered with global civil society organisations to prevent and fight infringements of children’s rights.
The South Atlantic Arts and Culture Trust promotes the support and development of musicians in the performing arts with a special focus on jazz musicians. This is done through the support of teachers, schools and development programmes, as well as selected concerts. The primary goal of the Trust is to raise funds to be used exclusively for the purpose of promoting, and co-ordinating arts & culture initiatives.
The Sekunjalo Development Foundation focuses on areas that have an impact on individual and societal development and play a significant role in nurturing young people who represent the future. This strategy is shaped by an increasing need to ensure effective stakeholder relations and the socio-economic needs of the communities in which the company conducts its business.
The development of leadership to assist with the transformation of the economy of the Republic of South Africa in a manner which is sensitive to the needs of all major stakeholders and major classes in the economy of South Africa.
Through the Social Entrepreneurship Foundation, Survé Philanthropies is committed to the development of social entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial initiatives, and has developed a fund to support these through donations; loans, equity investment; joint venture and partnership; education; guidance and the provision of consultancy, management and other forms of service.

ENTREPRENEURS
The Cape Town Activa Project, by the City of Cape Town,which is aimed at creating and fostering an eco-system in which all entrepreneurs and job seekers can maximize their potential through networks.
The Business Place is a network of small business support centres. It was the only small business development support centre to coordinate and group all SME players in Southern Africa under one umbrella when it was established.. Services offered by The Business Place includes: coordinated business support, incubation, mentorship, market linkages, and financing interventions.
The Black Business Chamber provides support to 200 black entrepreneurs in the townships of South Africa. The Black Business Chamber seeks to facilitate economic growth opportunities through skills development.
INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers is a non-profit global organisation of the world’s press. It represents 18,000 publications, 15,000 online sites, and over 3000 companies in more than 120 countries from all over the world. Our media investment, Independent Media, is now a regular participant and member of WAN’s media organisation.
Dr Iqbal Survé is the Co-Chairman of the Saudi-South Africa Business Council, along with Co-Chair Said Al Qahtani. The Business Council was founded to create economic ties and increase trade and investment opportunities between the two countries.
Dr Iqbal Survé is a founding member of the Siemens Global Sustainability Advisory Board, he was also appointed as one of the ten top leaders in the world on the Board. The Board is equipped with outside perspective, and insight to drive Siemens’s strategic, innovative sustainability measures forward in an ever-changing world.
INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS
The BRICS Council is composed of 25 of the most prominent business entrepreneurs from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. These individuals represent various industries and sectors within the BRICS nations. Dr Iqbal Survé was appointed as a South African delegate of the BRICS Council by the President of South Africa, Jacob Zuma.
The Clinton Global Initiative was founded in 2005 by President Bill Clinton as an initiative of the Clinton Foundation. The Clinton Global Initiative brings together global leaders to create innovative solutions to the world’s most serious issues. Dr Iqbal Survé is a founding board member of the foundation.
The Business 20 (B20) outreach group is an influential platform bringing together business leaders from G20 economies, and advocates for critical issues for enterprises.
Dr Iqbal Survé is a WEF veteran and has been appointed as the Vice-Chairperson of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Emerging Multinationals, and is a member of the Global Growth Companies Board. Sekunjalo has also previously been invited by WEF to join a number of countries in the Green Growth Alliance (G2A2) where Sekunjalo and various other members of WEF and the G20 group have supported initiatives to limit the impact of climate change.

The China Development Bank and the China-Africa Development Fund (CADFund) is one of the “Eight Measures” for China-Africa cooperation announced by the Chinese government. The China-Africa Development Fund was established to encourage and support Chinese companies to invest in Africa.
