More than a decade since the Sekunjalo-led acquisition of Independent Media, it is increasingly evident that the organisation has been subjected to a persistent campaign of negative narratives, selective reporting, and reputational harm.
These developments must be viewed within the broader context of South Africa’s media landscape—particularly the slow pace of transformation in media ownership and control.
Independent Media remains one of the few large-scale, black-owned and managed media institutions in the country, and its existence continues to challenge entrenched interests.
Over time, a concerning pattern has emerged:
- The consistent publication of unbalanced and, at times, misleading reports by competing media houses such as News24, Daily Maverick and others.
- The amplification of narratives that are not subjected to the same level of scrutiny or verification
- The apparent alignment of certain financial institutions and other stakeholders in ways that warrant closer examination
- The use of state-related responses and intelligence-linked narratives to influence public discourse
Taken together, these actions show clearly that Independent Media is being subjected to a coordinated effort designed to intimidate, weaken, and ultimately undermine a transformed media entity.
Sekunjalo has, for many years, exercised restraint in the face of these attacks, prioritising stability, investment, jobs and the long-term sustainability of the business.
That period of restraint has now come to an end.
Enough is enough.
Sekunjalo Investment Holdings will take decisive and appropriate action to protect its investments, its reputation, and the principles of fair competition and transformation.
This will include instituting legal proceedings where defamatory statements and harmful misinformation are identified.
We will also systematically expose the interests and networks that underpin these sustained attacks.
We will now be engaging all relevant regulatory, legal, and public platforms to ensure that the full facts are brought to light.
Sekunjalo remains firmly committed to transformation, media diversity, and the advancement of a fair and inclusive media environment in South Africa.
